Red Foxes Fall to Navy, 2-1
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Marist women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Navy on Sept. 12 to open the Navy Invitational. The Red Foxes are now 1-3-0 on the season while Navy improves to 3-2-2.
Navy senior Morgan Dankanich buried her fourth goal of the season with 9:25 remaining in the second half to seal the win for the Midshipmen. Navy jumped out to a 1-0 lead when freshman Annie Morgan fed Courtney Mason from 18 yards out and Mason netted her first goal of the season. Senior Marissa Mertens (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored the equalizer for Marist in the 59th minute after corraling a loose ball in front of the net. She was one of six Red Foxes to play all 90 minutes of the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Houghton (Danbury, Conn.) made four saves in the losing effort.
The Midshipmen outshot the Red Foxes 20-2 and owned a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks in the game.
The Red Foxes will face off against Delaware at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in Annapolis, Md., to close out the Navy Invitational. Marist will return to Tenney Stadium to host Providence at 7 p.m. Sept. 17.
