Redhawk Men's Soccer Takes No. 23 UW to Scoreless Draw
In their third consecutive double overtime match, the Seattle University men's soccer team took the No. 23 Huskies of Washington to a 0-0 draw at Championship Field. SU (1-1-2) extended their unbeaten streak to three in Sunday afternoon's season home opener in front of a sellout crowd of 788.
"We were disappointed to walk off the field against a team that is ranked highly and is pretty established after today's game. We are not where we want to be, but I'm pretty proud of the guys. The effort was great and there was a lot of good performances out there today," said head coachBrad Agoos.
Redhawk goalkeeper Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) put together a solid defensive game, remaining composed throughout the 110-minute battle. While his stat line only read three saves, he intercepted UW cross after cross ensuring that the Huskies would not be able to find the back of the net. Washington tallied a 12-5 advantage on corner kicks, but Feener would make sound judgments off the line to preserve his first shutout of the season.
"Jake was very solid on crosses and you have to be against a team like Washington. They put the ball in your box every chance they can and he was very good today. He is making tremendous strides as a young goalkeeper," Agoos said.
The early portion of the game opened with Washington sending in a series of shots, followed by the Redhawks creating their own sequence of offensive attempts. Both defenses managed to clear the ball out of their half, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Possession transferred between both sides regularly throughout the match, creating a tight defensive battle.
With the clock ticking towards end of regulation, Seattle U put together a final run down the field.Kevin Cook (Gresham, Ore.) took the ball up the flank finding Scott Greenburg (Seattle, Wash.) down the line in the UW half. Greenburg took the ball deeper into the Husky half, trying to set up a final shot, but the UW defense managed to double team him and deflect his shot opportunity.
In the first overtime period the Husky's Ben Fisk sent in their best opportunity of the match. His shot bounced off the post and then rolled towards the center of the goal, but Feener was there to grab and boot it out of the SU half.
SU set up a final offensive opportunity in the second overtime period, as Marshall Kosaka (Burien, Wash.) found Mikey Ramos (Spokane Valley, Wash.) about 25 yards outside the UW goal. Ramos drove the ball towards the goal on a breakaway, but was tripped up as he sent in his shot with 35 seconds remaining.
UW outshot SU 15-11, with SU landing 4 shots on frame to the Husky's three.
The Redhawks will host fellow Jesuit rival Gonzaga on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to conclude their season-opening home stand. First kick is slated 4 p.m. at Championship Field.
"We need to get as rested and mentally prepared for Gonzaga. They are such a rivalry for us, not just as a soccer program, but our two schools. We have to take care of ourselves, focus and work hard to get a big win on our home field," concluded Agoos.
