Redlands Men’s Soccer Falls Late to Scarlet Raiders
The University of Redlands men’s soccer team fell short of victory earlier today losing to east coast opponent Rutgers University – Newark (NJ), 1-2 in overtime. The Bulldogs came back from a late deficit to send the contest into an extra period, but the Scarlet Raiders pulled out the win in the seventh minute of added time.
The game remained scoreless for the first 59 minutes of play before Rutgers-Newark found the back of the net. Junior midfielder Brian Barrera (Elizabethtown, NJ) punched in a top left goal giving the Scarlet Raiders the first shift of momentum.
Shortly after the Maroon and Gray picked up the pace and 2010 All-Region defender sophomore Richie Marquez (Pomona, CA) evened up the ball game heading in his second career goal at the 83:07 mark. Senior defender Sean Cruz (The Woodlands, TX) set up Marquez perfectly with a smooth corner kick.
Sophomore forward Daniel Naranjo (Elizabeth, NJ) finished up the game posting a score in the 97th minute.
Redlands outshot Rutgers-Newark, 22-6 with 12 coming in the second half, despite only find the back of the net on one occasion. Senior forward Cody Carlson (Burbank, CA) led the team totaling five shots.
The Bulldogs return to play on Sept. 11 as the squad will challenge non-conference foe Chapman University at 7 p.m. under the lights of Faquhar Field.
