Regis Topples #16 Fort Lewis 3-2 at Home
DENVER, Colo.: The weather was beautiful and the tempers were hot today at the Regis Match Pitch. Nationally ranked #16 Fort Lewis College made the trek up to Denver to give the Rangers some tough play and a hard time.
Regis was not fazed however, putting 3 goals up on their opposition before the Skyhawks were able to manage a goal of their own.
25 minutes into the first half, senior Ben Fredrickson picked up a free kick opportunity and made something out of it.
From 40 yards out, he sent the ball toward the goal and the head of junior Arnthor "Thor" Kristinsson. Kristinsson beat the Skyhawk's defense for a header attempt that he sent over the goalie's outstretched hands for the first Ranger goal.
Roughly six minutes later, junior forward Martin Maybin stole the ball from the opposition, took a few touches to earn a clear shot at the goal and scored to the right of the keeper.
After another six minutes have passed Northern Ireland duo Maybin and senior Mark Kelly connected for another attempt at the goal. Maybin earned the ball left of the 36 yard box and crossed in. Kelly won the head from FLC and scored over the goalie to bring RU up 3-0 36 minutes into the match.
Before the half was up, Fort Lewis would answer with two goals of their own, but neither team would manage a goal in the second half, resulting in a big Regis victory for Family and Alumni Weekend.
Eight yellow cards and one red card were given out throughout the match, seven penalties which were given to Fort Lewis.
Both teams put 15 shots in on the day, while RU managed to put seven on goal.
Sophomore goalie Christian Nicolosi put in six saves during 90:00 minutes of work in between the posts.
Regis will play again Wednesday, October 2nd at home at 3:30 p.m. The Rangers will take on Colorado Christian University on the Regis Match Pitch.
