Reid Scores in Final Seconds; UW-W Advances
Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) tends to save his goal scoring for the right moments. Tonight he did it again. Reid scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over UW-Superior with five seconds left in the match to send the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship match. The Warhawks (13-3-4) advance to play UW-Oshkosh on Friday at 6 pm in Oshkosh. Prior to Wednesday's win, Reid had scored three other dramatic game-winning goals in his career. Earlier this season he scored in the 82nd minute to lift the Warhawks to a 1-0 victory over Augustana. Last season Reid scored game-winners in two separate overtime games; once against Marian and the other against Augustana.
The first half was very evenly played. Both teams fired seven shots and had quality chances to score. Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) made three first half saves for the Warhawks while Zach Harwerth made two saves for the Yellowjackets.
UW-Superior's leading scorer, Gio Rodriguez, almost gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute with a bullet from the top of the box, but Rohde made the save. That was the only quality shot for the visitors in the second half.
In the final minute of play a Whitewater player sent a long ball towards the Yellowjackets' net. Michael Montanye (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) hustled down and knocked it off of a Superior defender to earn a corner kick for the Warhawks. John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took the corner at 89:45, and after ten seconds of the ball bouncing around in the box, Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) pounded it home. Kyle Ricely (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) earned the assist, his first of the season and of his collegiate career.
Rohde totaled four saves in the match en route to his sixth shutout of the season. The Warhawks have held their opponents scoreless in 11 of their 20 matches.
Up next for UW-Whitewater is a trip to Oshkosh. The Titans and Warhawks played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw three days ago. The re-match will be for all of the marbles; the winner is the 2014 WIAC champion. The Warhawks won WIAC titles from 2009-2011, sharing with Oshkosh in 2010.
Head coach Tony Guinn said about the upcoming match, "We had a good game with them when they were here. It was very evenly matched. With two quality teams it should be a really good game."
