Reid Scores OT Game-Winner; Streak to 11
In their first overtime game of the year, the sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team came away with a 3-2 victory over UW-Oshkosh on a goal by Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) 94 seconds into overtime at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The win is the eleventh in a row for the Warhawks who improve to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Titans fall to 6-5-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
For the first time since September 3rd, the Warhawks gave up the first goal of the game. The Titans' Alyssa Arnold dropped a shot over the head of the Warhawk goalkeeper in the 18th minute for a 1-0 lead.
UW-W earned a free kick in the 24th minute and elected Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial) to take it. Her cross found Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) who buried it in the lower left corner of the goal for her seventh tally of the season, tying the game at one.
Shortly after halftime the Warhawks took the lead when Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick) sent a ball from the left side into the box where Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) knocked it in with her head for a 2-1 lead.
Less than a minute later, the game was again tied on an unassisted goal by Titan Robyn Elliot from twenty yards out.
The Warhawks had their chances.
A shot by Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) in the 64th minute hit the post and moments later a shot by Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) hit the crossbar and the game remained tied.
Each team had one more solid opportunity in the final ten minutes, but both goalkeepers withstood the challenge and the game went to overtime.
The Warhawks took control right away firing three shots in the first 68 seconds of the extra period. The last of those three shots glanced off of a Titan defender, resulting in a corner kick for UW-W.
Substitute defender Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) took the corner and sent it into the box where it found Reid's head and then the back of the net.
Jennie Novak (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Academy) earned the win for the Warhawks, coming on in relief of Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) with 30 minutes to play. Novak made two saves in the match.
UW-W peppered the Titan goal with 38 shots, a season high, and twelve were on goal.
Head Coach Ryan Quamme stated after the match, "I'm proud of the way we battled back. I always tell our team that offense is inconsistent and defense is consistent and I think that showed tonight. We created some good opportunities but weren't sharp around the goal."
Up next for the Warhawks is a trip to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday. The Blugolds are one of three teams that are undefeated in WIAC play. Saturday's match is set to kickoff at 2 p.m.
