Reilly, Early Pace Stags To 1-0 Win
The Fairfield University women's soccer team evened its 2012 record at 2-2-0 with a 1-0 win over visiting Wagner College this afternoon on Lessing Field. The loss drops the Seahawks to 1-4-0 on the season.
Fairfield doubled Wagner in shots in the first period, 8-4, but could not break through and the teams went to intermission knotted 0-0. The Stags broke through early in the second-half on a set piece. Jessica Broadbent sent a corner to the opposite post where Lauren Reilly headed the ball into the back of the net.
The Stags defense was tested several times in the final 20 minute of the game, but Kathleen Early and her back line preserved the shutout. Early, who stopped four shots in the game, turned away several dangerous crosses, including one with just six minutes to play, to secure her first clean sheet. Wagner goalkeeper Lisa Capelli stopped five shots, four in the second-half, in playing the entire game.
Fairfield finished the game with a 25-8 advantage in shots over the course of the game, with a 17-4 edge in the second-half alone. The Stags also had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks, with seven in the second-half. Fairfield was called offsides on four occasions and committed more fouls, 15-8.
The Stags complete a three-game homestand on Friday, September 7 when they host intrastate foe Hartford on Lessing Field at 7 p.m.
