Reimer Scores, SLU Ties Saint Joseph’s
ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis pulled even in the 69th minute on Alli Reimer’s second goal of the season, but the Billikens had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Saint Joseph’s in an Atlantic 10 Conference game Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Jenny Hummert collected her third assist of the year, sending a pass from the right side to in front of the net. Reimer’s header just sneaked over the goal line at the 68:21 mark.
The Billikens (3-8-4, 1-3-2 A-10) created several good chances during the remainder of regulation, including two shots on frame. In the 89th minute, Hummert sent a rocket toward the net that Saint Joseph’s goalkeeper Christine Neal barely got a hand on, and the ball hit the crossbar.
Saint Louis keeper Katie Walsh made a save in each of the two overtime periods, while Neal stopped Jessie Jarrett’s shot on goal in the first extra session.
Saint Joseph’s (8-5-3, 3-1-2 A-10) struck just 2:44 into the game. Mo Hawkins got behind the SLU defense and fired a 12-yard shot to Walsh’s right that sailed through the upper corner for her seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 Hawk lead.
Saint Louis earned a 22-7 advantage in total shots, including 11-1 in the second half, and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Reimer and Hummert had five shots apiece, followed by Maddie Gebauer, Abbey Stock and Katelyn Hammarlund with three each.
“I thought we responded well to their early goal,” head coach Kat Mertz said. “Saint Joseph’s has a special player in Mo Hawkins, and she took advantage of a good opportunity.
“But I think in the second half we played really special ourselves,” Mertz said. “We got the ball wide, and Lindsay Elking did a great job tonight. We had some bad luck on a couple of shots, and their keeper came up with some huge saves. It would have been great to put one in to go ahead in the final minute, but I’m proud of the team for responding to the early adversity and scoring the equalizer.”
The Billikens play their final home game of the season Sunday, Oct. 21, against Temple at 1 p.m. Saint Louis seniors Reimer, Walsh, Maggie Baumann and Kaitlyn Doescher will be honored prior to the game.
