Rice Owls & North Texas Finish Tied 1-1
HOUSTON - The Rice and North Texas soccer teams finished in a 1-1 double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field in Houston.
Rice is now 7-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in C-USA action for a total of 10 points in the league standings. The Owls are now in a four-way tie for third place in the C-USA standings with five regular season games left to play. Rice had only one game this weekend, and have a chance to compile more C-USA points later this month when the league schedule balances itself out.
The Blue & Gray was also little out of balance in amassing an eye-opening 31-13 advantage in shots. The Owls also did all the scoring in the 1-1 deadlock. In the 15th minute Rice attempted to clear a ball out of its keeper’s box, but headed the ball erroneously into its own net.
North Texas held the 1-0 advantage until the 54th minute in a steady rain. Rice senior midfielder Gabriela Iribarne served a corner kick into traffic in front of the Mean Green goal, where sophomore defender Jenny Fichera headed the ball to the back of the net to level the score 1-1. The teams had a break for lightning in the 61st minute, but scoring was finished for the remainder of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
A total of nine Rice players finished the match with at least two shots. Credit Mean Green goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine with a career-best 11 saves.
The Owls next travel to Florida for a pair of league games against FIU and FAU on Oct 17 & 19, respectively. Rice is then back home for two games Oct. 24 &26.
