Richmond Defeats Lady Monarchs 3-1
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women’s soccer team (1-1) defeated Old Dominion (0-2) by a score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in the second and final game of the JMU Tournament for the Lady Monarchs.
Becca Wann scored the first goal for the Spiders with a rebound goal in the 38th minute off a shot fired by Kristen Lybert. That was Wann’s second goal of the season. The score would remain 1-0 until the 68th minute of action when Richmond’s Erin Layne scored from 18 yards out off a Jensen Smith assist.
Old Dominion would respond quickly with a 70th minute goal from freshman Jackie Stroud from 25 yards out, for her first of the season and of her very young career. The Lady Monarchs kept the offensive attack up as junior Taylor Smith was able to get off two shots shortly after Stroud’s goal; however, both were saved by freshman Spider goalkeeper Devin O’Brien.
The Spiders then countered with their third and final goal of the game in the 76th minute, as Kristen Lybert was able to put one past Meredith Lenox off an Ashley Riefner assist.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action on August 30 at 4 p.m., when they will take on Liberty in Lynchburg, Va.
