Ridley Lifts GW Over Old Dominion in OT
Aug. 24, 2014
WASHINGTON – Junior Kyla Ridley found the back of the net 1:41 into overtime to break a scoreless draw and lift the GW women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Ridley settled a pass from classmate Brooke Bean inside the box, dribbled through three Old Dominion (0-2-0) defenders and fired, curling the ball just inside the left post for her second game-winning goal of the weekend. With the win, the Colonials improve to 2-0-0 for the first time since 2007.
It was a battle on both the offensive and defensive ends between the two squads, and ODU held a slight 9-7 advantage in shots throughout the match, but redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn tallied five saves to preserve GW’s second straight shutout victory.
Senior Meg Murphy and junior Kristi Abbate took a team-high two shots apiece while the Colonials also saw attempts from freshman Brittany Cooper and sophomore MacKenzie Cowley.
GW looks for its third straight victory when it travels to Loyola on Friday, Aug. 29 for its first road match of the season. Action in Baltimore, Maryland is slated for 7 p.m.
