Road setback for Charlotte women’s soccer
DENTON, Texas – Four second-half goals created enough of a separation to hand Charlotte a 5-0 loss at Conference USA leader North Texas Friday night in Conference USA women’s soccer action.
Karla Pineda, the Mean Green’s leading scorer coming in, put her team ahead 1-0 at the 15:01 mark, burying an attempt from outside the box from the right side past 49ers’ starting goalie Annika McHenry.
A short time later, McHenry was removed from the contest after a collision with one of North Texas’ players, putting reserve Alex Weaver between the pipes for the rest of the match and just the second time this year. Weaver’s 71:35 of playing time marks the second most in a single game for the redshirt sophomore, trailing only the 101:31 she played at UTEP Oct. 11, 2013.
Neither team was able to score the remainder of the period, as the Mean Green held an 8-4 shot advantage at the intermission.
Shortly after the second half started, Charlotte (7-6-2, 4-3-1 C-USA) had an apparent game-tying goal on a free kick overturned due to being called offside in the 49th minute.
North Texas (12-4-1, 6-1-1 C-USA) increased its margin to a pair when Anna Flobeck converted a low shot to the lower left corner past Weaver on a Rachel Holden assist at the 59:25 mark.
Just over four minutes later, at 63:33, Tori Phillips booted home a long free kick opportunity to increase the Mean Green’s lead to 3-0.
Marchelle Davis would set Pineda up for her second tally of the evening, at 67:55, as she also placed a shot low behind Weaver from close range for a 4-0 NT edge.
Pineda took her turn on the assisting end, sending a free kick towards the net that found the head of Jackie Moreau to put North Texas ahead, 5-0.
Freshman Martha Thomas paced the Niners with four shots, as the squad finished with seven on the night. Pineda’s five attempts led all players.
The 49ers will look to get back to winning ways at 1 p.m. ET Sunday when they travel to Houston to face Rice in the final regular-season road match of the campaign.
