Roadrunners Rally From Behind To Defeat San Jose State 4-2
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Sam Peña (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) scored two goals in the second half to erase a 2-1 deficit as CSU Bakersfield defeated San Jose State 4-2 in women’s soccer action Friday night at CSUB’s Main Soccer Field.
Emily Noethe (Fr., Dallas, Ga., East Paulding HS) scored first for CSUB in the 25th minute. The Spartans tied the match in the 32nd minute on a McColl Matthews tally. Kelsey Lord gave San Jose State the lead at the 38:28 with a blast from 25 yards out.
Peña tied the match when her shot from just outside the 18-yard mark went in the top right of the net past Spartans’ goalie Meghan Maiwald. Peña gave the Roadrunners the lead for good at 60:05 when she took advantage of a Maiwald misplay in front of the net to score. Kassi Massey (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) scored an insurance goal in the 76th minute to make it the final 4-2.
“I think it was a well executed performance,” said CSUB Head Coach Melissa Phillips. “We changed our system from the beginning of the year and today we were able to put it play. We had full effort. It was exciting to see Sam (play well) and some of our experienced players come through.”
The Roadrunners travel to Stockton to take on Pacific Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
