Rocks Nails the Game-Winner
PURCHASE, N.Y. – Kynan Rocks nailed a game-winning goal in the first overtime period to give the Columbia men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Temple at Manhattanville College.
With the win, the Lions improve to 7-2-1 overall, while the team is tied for the lead in the Ivy League at 1-0-1. The loss for the Owls drops them to 8-4-1 overall on the season.
Temple started the match as the aggressors, firing three shots in the first 10 minutes. Dylan Castanheira was spot on all night, and picked up two of his season-high five saves during that span.
The Lions had their first look at net in the 25th minute, when two shots within 10 seconds of one another from Francisco Agrest were both saved by Temple goalie Alex Cagle. Andrew Tinari and Dylan Mott both had unsuccessful shot attempts in the first, as the Owls and Lions went into the locker room at halftime tied, 0-0.
Columbia had its best look during the second half in the 74th minute, when Arthur Bosua gathered a ball to the right of net and fired a shot that went wide.
Although the two teams would go into overtime, it would not take long for the Lions to have a look at a game-winner. Rocks took back possession on a ball played back to the goalie, dribbled in, then fired a left footed shot over the head of Cagle for the game-winning goal. The score for the sophomore was his first of the season and second of his career.
On Saturday, the Lions will return to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium for the first time since last season in a 4 p.m. match against Princeton, which can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.
