DETROIT -- The Titan women's soccer team captured its fourth win in the last five matches as senior Lauren Roffey scored two goals including the game winner off a set piece at 58:18. Detroit (8-3-1/1-0 Horizon League) went on to record a 3-1 victory over Oakland (2-7) Thursday afternoon from Titan Field.
Roffey's first of the game came in the 32nd minute as her shot from inside the 18-yard box found the back of the net. Her second of the day, and a career season high fifth of the year, came off a set piece in the 59th minute. A corner kick from junior Sarah Dzuris was played into the six-yard box and 5-10 freshman Alyssa Riley jumped above everyone and headed it from the far post to the near post and Roffey tapped in her eighth career marker.
An Oakland goal in the 86th minute made it 2-1 Detroit with just 4:29 remaining in the contest. Titan points leader Abby McCollum would catch a break as the opposing goalkeeper kicked the ball and McCollum blocked it inside the six-yard box and the ball trickled on goal and in for her fifth of the season adding a little insurance in the closing minutes. McCollum now has a team-best 18 points and her five goals place her second on the squad.
“I think it was a good effort today and we beat a quality team,” said women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec.
They're a team that keeps the ball on the ground and our midfield had to do a good job of containing their midfield. Overall I think we did a good job of pressing and we were able to capitalize on some of their mistakes.”
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) ranked Detroit No. 10 in the Great Lakes Region of the NSCAA Regional Rankings released this past week and the Titans will play a Milwaukee team on Sunday who sits at No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region.
“Rankings are one thing but the main goal is getting to the NCAA Tournament and improving every day. Our goal is to get better every day and work on things we didn't do well in the previous game and I think the girls have done that and it has shown in the results that we've had this year,” added Lupenec.
Detroit and Milwaukee will meet Sunday at 2:00 p.m. EST. The contest will be the first of the year featured on the Horizon League Network allowing fans the opportunity to watch live online video of the event at no charge.
