'Roos Fall 4-1 to Leathernecks
(Macomb, Ill.) - Friday afternoon, the UMKC women's soccer team (3-6-3, 0-1 SL) opened league play with a 4-1 loss on the road to the Western Illinois Leathernecks (8-2, 1-0 SL).
Late in the first period during in the 39th minute, the Leathernecks got on the board first when forward Sloane Levin (3) fed forward Chrissy Campbell (3) for the score
About two minutes later, Western Illinois increased its lead to two when midfielder Jordan Walgren (2) placed a corner-kick near the goalie box as the ball found its way into the net.
At the half, the Leathernecks held the shot-count, 11-5, while keeper Nina Tzianos tallied four saves.
Coming out of the locker room, Western Illinois wasted no time in pushing its lead to three. During the 52nd minute, (1) Taylor Henning sent a header-pass to midfielder Sarah Wright (3) and was able to knock it in.
During the 80th minute, the Leathernecks capitalized off a Kangaroo turnover as Levin (4) picked up her second assist of the day when she found midfielder/forward Skyler Jessop for the goal to make it a 4-0 contest.
The Kangaroos were able to get on the board during 82nd minute when midfielder Zaina Mayer (1) sent a pass to midfielder Hannah Chadick (2) for the score.
Kansas City will look to bounce back this Sunday when it heads to Indianapolis, Ind. to face the IUPUI Jaguars at 1 p.m.
