‘Roos knock off FIU in OT, 3-2, for First Win of the Season
(Kansas City, Mo.) – Well, it looks like a change of scenery is what the UMKC women’s soccer team needed to get their first victory of the season. Tonight, the ‘Roos ended a seven-game road losing skid by beating the Florida International Panthers, 3-2, in a thrilling overtime match.
In the first half, the ‘Roos got off to a fast start by notching two goals, doubling their total amount of the whole season. The first came at the foot of sophomore midfielder Ashley Gann (unassisted) during the 28th minute for her first of the season.
A little over 10 minutes later, FIU answered with a score of their own by way of senior midfielder Victoria Miliucci, assisted by defenseman Nikki Rios, to tie the game at one.
Then, in 40th minute, UMKC answered right back with a goal from sophomore forward Taylor Bare, her second on the season. The assist was credited to freshman midfielder Allison Schau and UMKC took a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
As for the second half, it was a battle throughout. During the 70th minute, FIU tied the game at two with a goal by sophomore forward Chelsea Leiva, assisted by midfielder/forward Kim Lopez.
After that, no one else scored and the game went to overtime. Fortunately for the ‘Roos, considering this was their third overtime period this season, it was a chance for them to finally get over the hurdle of just tying games rather than winning or losing. Thankfully, that is exactly what they did.
In the 99th minute, senior midfielder Laura Creason scored on a unassisted goal to not only give the ‘Roos their first win of the season, but new head coach Chris Cissell’s first at UMKC.
Also, three goals scored in a single game is a school-record for the ‘Roos.
UMKC will look to build off this win when they travel up the road to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic on Sunday. The Owls suffered a 3-0 loss at home against Mercur earlier this evening.
