Rosales Nets Hat Trick in Warhawk Win
Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) notched her first collegiate hat trick to lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Carthage College Tuesday in Kenosha. The win is the sixth in a row for the 10-2 Warhawks, while the Lady Reds drop to 3-8.
Head Coach Ryan Quamme has talked all season about how his team needs to get off to a fast start. Although the Warhawks didn't score their first goal until the 36th minute, they put the pressure on the Lady Reds right out of the gates.
The Warhawks earned six corner kicks and fired six shots in the first 31 minutes of play. Rosales broke through in the 36th minute with her first goal of the match, scoring on a pass from Leah Nehila (Round Lake, Ill./Grant Community).
UW-Whitewater held a 9-4 advantage in shots at the half.
Coach Quamme's fast start apparently wasn't restricted to the start of the match because the Warhawks came out of halftime firing away. Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) put a shot on goal less than thirty seconds into the half, but the shot was stopped by the Lady Red goalkeeper.
A foul on Carthage in the 50th minute resulted in a penalty kick for the Warhawks. Reid stepped up and knocked it past the keeper for a 2-0 Warhawk lead. Seven minutes later Reid tallied her second goal of the match, fourteenth of the season, after scoring on a pass from Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South).
Less than ten minutes later Rosales notched her second goal of the match giving the Warhawks a 4-0 lead with less than 25 minutes to go. Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) recorded the assist on the goal.
Carthage put a chink in the Warhawks' armor in the 68th minute scoring a goal to make it 4-1, but UW-W turned around two and a half minutes later to regain their four goal lead. This time Reid was the helper to Rosales' goal that finished off the hat trick.
Carthage added another goal late in the match to bring the final score to 5-2.
Rosales is the second player this season to record a hat trick for the Warhawks. Reid, the team's leading scorer, tallied her second collegiate hat trick back on September 9th in an 8-0 win over North Park.
UW-Whitewater outshot the hosts 19-13 including 13-3 in shots on goal. For the Warhawks, this is highest total shots on goal, and the third time this season they reached double-digits. This is the eighth time this season that the Warhawks have held their opponent to three or less shots on goal.
The Warhawks return home for their next match on October 10th against league opponent UW-Eau Claire. UW-Whitewater is looking for their 32nd consecutive WIAC regular season win. The game also marks the Warhawks' annual "Go Pink" event. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, and all donations go toward funding breast cancer research.
