Royals Battle To Draw With Farmingdale State
Freshman forward Samantha Wargo (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) scored on a header in the 25th minute as The University of Scranton women’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made a career-high nine saves, including a diving stop in the second half, to help preserve the draw as Farmingdale State (3-2-2) outshot the Royals, 15-13.
Wargo scored on a header when she beat a defender to the far post to score off a free kick by sophomore forward Kelly Egan (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex), who picked up her first assist of the season and 10th of her career.
The Rams knotted the score in the 43rd minute when a free kick by junior defender Amanda Kiefer (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) snuck through the Royals’ defense where junior forward Ashlee Thompson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) chipped it past Welsh for the goal.
Scranton (3-3-1) received three shots apiece from Wargo, junior forward Gianna Vitolo (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) and sophomore forward Christina Akalski (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial). The Royals held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and also had a 4-2 advantage in shots in the overtime periods.
The Royals are now 3-1-1 all-time against Farmingdale State in a series that dates back to 2009.
Scranton is back on the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when the Royals travel to Allentown, Pa. to take on Muhlenberg at 7 p.m.
