Royals Down Wilkes, 1-0, Wednesday
EDWARDVILLE, Pa.—The University of Scranton men’s soccer team held Wilkes University to just two shots on goal en route to a 1-0 victory in non-conference action Wednesday evening.
Sophomore midfielder Rich Loeffler (Matawan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) broke through on the offensive end for the Royals in the 72nd minute by drilling in a shot from 20 yards out for the match-winning goal as Scranton improved to 12-1-2. The loss dropped the Colonels to 5-10-1.
The Royals held a commanding 27-7 advantage in shot, but senior goalkeeper Dave Marr (Muncy, Pa./Warrior Run) kept Wilkes in contention by finishing with 13 saves. Scranton also held an 11-1 margin in penalty kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Ryan (Dallas, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), playing his third match due to an injury to senior Jamie Dillon (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East), made two saves—both in the first half—to improve his goalkeeping record to 2-1.
Loeffler’s goal was his fifth of the season.
The Royals, currently ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will play their final regular-season match of the season this Saturday, October 27, against Juniata College in Landmark Conference action beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. Scranton enters the match in a three-way tie for first place with Catholic University and Susquehanna University.
