RU Drop NMHU 3-0, Advance to RMAC Tournament
Another Shut Out for RU Women’s Soccer, Rangers Defeat Cowgirls 3-0 and Earn a Spot in the RMAC Tournament
DENVER, Colo.: Regis women's soccer came on to the Regis Match Pitch today knowing that a win over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent's New Mexico Highlands would mean a potential spot in the RMAC Tournament.
Intent on a win to finish out their regular season and honor their five seniors, the women took the field by storm, defeating the Cowgirls 3-0 in 90:00 minutes, keeping their streak going to now five games without a loss.
Regis scored early in the match off a big corner kick by senior Rachel McMahon in the 15th minute. She found fellow Ranger, junior Kiki Arnold for a header that cleared the Cowgirl goalie and went to the very top right of the goal to give Regis the 1-0 advantage.
The rest of the first half remained scoreless on both sides, with RU staying an even 5-5 in shots with Highlands.
The second half however, was different. With Regis outshooting the opposition 7-4 in the second 45:00 and senior Ellen Augsburger putting up five saves throughout the entire match, the Rangers would keep NMHU scoreless.
Two minutes into the second half, a Cowgirl defender took a bad touch on the ball sending a screamer through to the back of her own net to put the Rangers up 2-0 with much of the game left to play.
With that second goal in place, Regis went on a frenzy with both offensively and defensively, maintaining most of the possession throughout the rest of the match and putting another goal through in the 65th minute.
While senior CC Rinehart was receiving the ball from her teammate just outside the 6-yard box, she was pushed from behind by the Cowgirl goalie, causing the official to blow her whistle and issue the Rangers a penalty kick attempt that Rinehart would take herself.
She sent it through the posts to put the final score at 3-0 for the rest of the match.
Regis advances to 8-7-2 overall and 6-6-2 in the RMAC, earning them a spot in the RMAC Tournament. The Rangers will take on the Cowgirls once again for the first game in the conference tournament on Wednesday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. at NMHU. The winner of the match will move on in the tournament and play at Mines the following weekend.
