RU Men’s Soccer Home Opener a 3-2 RU Victory
DENVER, Colo.: The Regis men's soccer (1-0) 2013 season started off with quite a match for all 315 fans that came out to watch the home opener in Denver, Colo.
The Rangers started off the match with two big goals in the second minute and ninth minute, before giving two up to the Rattlers of St. Mary's University (Texas) to make it an even score.
It would not be until the 80th minute of the game that RU would put the last goal in off a corner kick to snag the win.
Starting strong right out of the gate, Northern Ireland duo Mark Kelly (senior) andMartin Maybin (junior) connected to score the first goal. Kelly passed the ball in to Maybin on the left of the keeper outside the 18 yard box, who sent the ball to the right of the Rattler's goalie for the 1-0 goal.
A short seven minutes later, Kelly earned the ball again about 40 yards out from the opposition's goal. He passed over to freshman transfer Jake Gilchrist-Dudley who broke from his defender, dribbled a few steps and beat the keeper to the right to go up 2-0.
STMU evened the score with two goals later in the first half, first scoring off a good run by Rattler Alexis Santamaria in the 16th minute and again off a free ball 36 yards out in to STMU forward Jack Wolf in the 24th minute.
With the hot sun beating down on the pitch and temperatures rising, the rest of the first half and most of the second half stayed quiet on both sides in terms of goals.
Then the Rangers earned a corner kick opportunity that junior Davey Hewitt of which would take advantage.
Hewitt sent a well-placed ball in to freshman Louis Barrow at the right of the 18-yard box, and the defender headed the ball towards the goal. Kelly nicked the ball to send it closer and junior transfer Arnthor Kristinsson finished the job, heading the ball past the goalie's left to bring in his first career game-winner for Regis.
The Rangers kept the defense tight in the last 10 minutes, not allowing St. Mary's another look at the goal and finishing the match with a 3-2 decision in favor of RU.
Nicolosi spent 90:00 minutes in between the posts for Regis, putting up three saves on the day. Regis put up five shots on goal in 12 attempts for the win, while only allowing the Rattlers six shots throughout the match.
Next weekend, RU will take on #14 Northeastern University on Friday, September 13 for Parent's Weekend. The match will start at 5:00 p.m. at the Regis Match Pitch in Denver, Colo.
