Rueth's hat trick leads Centre to 5-0 win over Millsaps
The Centre women's soccer team dominated play and got a hat trick from Megan Rueth on the way to a 5-0 victory over Millsaps in a Southern Collegiate Athletic matchup Sunday in Danville, Ky.
On a day when Centre honored its six seniors in their final home game, it was three freshmen who combined for the five goals. The goals in the hat trick were the first three in the career of Rueth, a first year forward/midfielder from St. Charles, Ill., and came as part of a match in which Centre took 24 shots while limiting Millsaps to just two.
Though the statistics were lopsided in Centre's favor, it wasn't until the 28th minute when the Colonels got on the board, going up 1-0 when Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) scored her fifth goal of the season off a cross from Elizabeth Mason (Lawrenceburg, Ky.). Five minutes later, Rueth scored the first of her goals on a cross from Meagan Redding (Lafayette, Ind.).
Just before the half, Hannah Kroskie (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored the first goal of her career to put the Colonels up 3-0. The score remained that way for much of the second half before Rueth scored in the 87th and 88th minutes for the hat trick and the 5-0 win.
Senior goalkeeper Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) made two saves in posting her 10th shutout of the season while Molly Beth Jourdan made three stops for Millsaps. Centre held a 6-3 edge in corners.
With the victory, Centre improves to 11-3-1 overall and 4-2 in SCAC play while Millsaps falls to 4-12 with a 1-6 league record. The Colonels wrap up regular season play next weekend with a trip to Oglethorpe (2-9-1, 1-5 SCAC) on Friday and Birmingham Southern (9-4-1, 5-1) on Sunday.
