LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Bakersfield scored four goals in a span of 2:40 midway through the first half as the Roadrunners (2-0) defeated Howard (0-4) 5-0 in men’s soccer action Friday night in the first match of UNLV’s Johann Memorial Classic.
The scoring began at 26:27 when Simon Doherty (Jr., West Lothian, Scotland, FDU) connected on a 12-yarder that made it past the right post. Christian Duarte (Jr., Houston, Texas, Clear Springs HS) scored 1:15 later which was followed up by Julian Zamora’s (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) first career goal 23 seconds later.
The spurt concluded 1:02 later when David Velasquez (R-Sr., Los Angeles, Calif., Locke HS) who had the assist on the first three goals, blasted a goal from short range. The first three goals came 1:38 apart, the eighth fastest in Division I school history. Zamora added the fifth goal in the 84th minute.
Velasquez is now tied three other 'Runners for the Bakersfield Division I record for most assists in a match.
The tournament concludes for Bakersfield Sunday when the Roadrunners face IPFW at 10:30 a.m.
