Rutgers Men’s Soccer Adds JUCO All-American
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 21, 2014) – Rutgers men’s soccer head coach Dan Donigan has announced the addition of Junior College All-American Jack Verth (Broxbun, Scotland) to the Scarlet Knight roster for the upcoming fall season.
“Jack is a leader on the field. He is a mature, tough and rugged defensive minder player that can get into the attack,” said Donigan of RU’s latest addition. “He is good in the air and communicates very well on the field. He’s like having a coach on the field with the way he connects with his teammates. He should bring a competitive mentality to our team.”
Verth was the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Year for Region XIX and a First Team NJCAA Division I All-American at Burlington County Community College. BCC’s first All-American since 1996, Verth helped the Barons advance to the national championship tournament for the first team in 17 years. The squad finished at 15-3-3 and ranked 11th among NJCAA Division I teams in the nation. Last season, he appeared in 21 games for BCC, scoring 10 goals along with 10 assists and compiled a .455 shot percentage.
A native of Bronxbun, Scotland, Verth spent five years as part of the Hibernian FC youth academy in Edinburgh, Scotland before coming stateside.
The Rutgers men’s soccer team begins its first season of Big Ten action this fall. RU will play eight NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, with six of those teams coming from the Big Ten. Yurcak Field will play host to 12 regular season contests, including four conference matches.
The 2014 slate gets underway with a pair of exhibition contests at Virginia on Saturday, Aug. 16 and at home versus NJIT on Saturday, Aug. 23. The regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 29 at Yurcak Field with UMKC.
