Rutgers Soccer Drops Decision to Marquette
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 23, 2012) – Rutgers women’s soccer (8-4, 1-3) fell to No. 21 Marquette, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The Golden Eagles (7-2-1, 3-0) used two quick strikes in the first half to secure the victory.
“We just didn’t keep the ball,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “Some of our questionable decisions led to some early counter attacks. We are building and people are starting to get forward on the field, but when you lose the ball, it is hard to transition out of that.
“This team is still a work in progress. I’m very proud of this team,” Crooks continued. “We just have to learn from our experiences and start taking shots to put pressure on our opponents.”
Marquette struck first in the 19th minute, as Cara Jacobson slid a pass to a streaking Taylor Madigan inside the box. The junior pushed a shot past a diving Jessica Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) for the first score of the game.
The Golden Eagles struck again four minutes later on a Maegan Kelly strike. From 18 yards out, the junior punched the ball just under the crossbar to put MU up 2-0.
The best opportunity for RU came with 4:51 remaining in the second half. Building from the back, redshirt junior forward Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) played a ball to Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) on the left side of the box. The freshman forward blasted a shot on frame, by MU goalkeeper Amanda Engel was there for the stop.
For the game, MU outshot RU by a 19-9 mark. Janosz made a season-high seven stops in the effort. The redshirt junior goalkeeper moves to 5-2 on the season.
Rutgers packs up for a four-game road swing, visiting St. John’s and Syracuse next weekend. RU and STJ square off Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Knights and Orange meet on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
