Rutgers Women’s Soccer Dominates Cincinnati
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 14, 2012) – Led by two goals from forward Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada), the Rutgers women’s soccer team overpowered Cincinnati (4-12-1, 1-9) by a score of 5-0 on Senior Day this Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field.
Filigno passes Carli Lloyd for first all time at Rutgers with her seventh game-winning goal in 2012. With two scores, the forward ranks fifth all-time at RU with 14 goals this season. She is one score away from a five-way tie for the record.
The five goals by the Scarlet Knights (11-6-1, 4-5-1) marked the most since Sept. 22, 2008 (against Villanova, 5-0). The eight goals over the weekend marked the most in back-to-back games for RU since Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2006 when RU earned a 3-0 win over Marquette and a 5-0 win over USF.
As RU honored five seniors, three contributed to the offensive firepower, while two held strong on the defensive side for the shutout. Redshirt senior Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.) tallied a goal and an assist. Senior forward April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) notched two assists and senior midfielder Maura McLaughlin (Robbinsville, N.J.) posted her first career score.
The Scarlet Knights broke through in the 13th minute, as Price chipped a pass from the left sideline into the box for Filigno. The redshirt junior did the rest, pushing the ball past UC goalkeeper Kristina Utley to give RU an early 1-0 advantage.
DiPaolo added to the score in the 24th minute off a set piece. Freshman forward Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) sent a corner kick to the converted outside back on the right sideline. DiPaolo blasted a shot from 23 yards out, dropping it over the UC goalkeeper’s head.
Filigno made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute off a beautiful cross from DiPaolo. From the right sideline, DiPaolo floated a cross to the back post, where Filigno headed it into the bottom right of the net.
Cole added to the tally in the 43rd minute with a penalty kick. After a hand ball in the box by Cincinnati, the freshman notched her second goal of the season, beating Utley to the right.
McLaughlin scored her first career goal in the 50th minute. Price started the play, dishing off to a streaking Cassie Inacio (Manalapan, N.J.) at the top of the box. Inacio touched a pass to McLaughlin, who buried the shot to put RU up 5-0.
RU nearly posted five scores in the first stanza, as redshirt freshman Amanda DeVolk (Frisco, Texas) was taken down in the box in the 29th minute. Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada) took the penalty kick for the Scarlet Knights, but Utley was able to make a diving save to her right.
Senior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) made two saves to improve her record to 6-4-1 with 5.3 shutouts.
