Saint Louis Defeats Charlotte in A-10 Opener
ST. LOUIS – Freshman Andrea Strebler (Fenton, Mo./Ursuline) scored her first collegiate goal in the 67th minute to give Saint Louis a 2-1 victory over Charlotte Saturday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams.
Sophomore Jenny Hummert (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph’s) scored her third goal of the season in the first half, tying her for the team lead. Junior goalkeeper Katie Walsh (Chesterfield, Mo./Whitfield) made four saves for the Billikens (3-5-2, 1-0-0 A-10), who topped Charlotte (3-6-3, 0-1-0 A-10) for the first time since 2005.
Hummert gave the Bills a 1-0 lead at the 21:14 mark. She intercepted an errant clearing attempt by Charlotte goalkeeper Natalie LaVigne and fired a shot from 35 yards into the upper right corner.
Charlotte tallied the equalizer at 36:55. Macky Wingo, assisted by Sara Trexler, slipped a shot into the lower right corner from five yards away to collect her team-leading fourth goal of the year. The score remained tied at intermission.
A Billiken corner kick led to the game-winning goal. Senior Colleen Kustura (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) and sophomore Jessie Jarrett (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) each directed a shot on goal following the corner that was saved by a Charlotte defender. The third time was the charm, however, as Strebler gathered the second rebound and banged home a shot from four yards out.
Saint Louis registered season highs in shots (16) and shots on goal (12). Hummert tied for game-high honors with four shots, also tying the season high by a Billiken. Ten Billikens recorded at least one shot.
Saint Louis continues a three-game homestand Friday, Oct. 7, hosting Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
