Saints Break Through, Advance to Quarters
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - Brittany Pfaff scored the only goal in the 71st minute as No. 6 seed Siena Women's Soccer topped 11th seeded Saint Peter's 1-0 in the First Round of the MAAC Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Siena (10-8-1) advances to the quarterfinal round to face third seed Iona here tomorrow at 11 a.m.
The Saints dominated throughout, out-shooting Saint Peter's (2-15) 20-6 and held a 5-3 edge in corners. But despite their numerous opportunities, Siena could not break through until late in the match.
Coreena D'Alfonso played a through ball to Pfaff. The senior captain then did what she does best - beat her defender 1v1 and scored as Siena beat Saint Peter's for the 16th consecutive time. The MAAC's leading scorer with 32 points, Pfaff's goal was her 13th of the season and fifth game-winning tally.
Taylor Booth made two saves in goal to post her fifth shutout of the season for the Saints which earned their first-ever win in Florida and reached double digits in wins for the first time since 2010 and just the eighth time in program history.
A well-rested Iona team is next up for the Saints. Siena out-shot Iona 13-6 and took all four corners in a strong performance in New Rochelle Oct. 19, but the Gaels won 1-0 in overtime.
