Saints Clinch Fifth Seed in MAAC Tournament
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Women’s Soccer will head into this weekend’s MAAC Championships on a high note. The Saints clinched the No. 5 seed with a 1-0 shutout of Quinnipiac, marking the program’s milestone 250th all-time victory.
Siena (7-6-6, 4-2-4) will travel to face fourth seeded Rider in the MAAC Quarterfinals Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J. The teams met just last Saturday, playing to a scoreless draw in Loudonville.
Sophomore Andrea Pereira netted the lone goal of the match in the 33rd minute. A blocked shot caromed to Pereira to the left of the net and she fired it low and off Quinnipiac (3-13-1, 2-7-1) keeper Natalia Grodzki for her third goal of the season.
Siena out-shot the Bobcats 12-7. Quinnipiac, which played a player down for the final 27 minutes following a red card, held a 3-2 advantage in corners.
Senior captain Taylor Booth made two saves to post her sixth shutout of the year for the Saints and fourth in the past six matches. Grodzki also made two saves for Quinnipiac which has lost 14 straight road matches dating back to last season.
Siena now heads into the postseason riding a wave of momentum. The Saints are unbeaten in 12 of their last 14 matches (6-2-6) with their only losses one-goal road setbacks at Monmouth and Fairfield, the teams seeded first and second in the Tournament respectively.
