Saints Dispatch Marist in Double Overtime
LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the second consecutive season Siena Women’s Soccer defeated MAAC rival Marist by an identical 2-1 score in overtime. Darby D’Angelo was this year’s hero as the freshman striker scored the golden goal in the 107th minute as the Saints knocked off the Red Foxes at Siena Field.
Classmate Jayanna Monds also scored for Siena (7-6, 3-3) which ran its unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1) over their I-87 rivals. Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Dorado added eight saves for the Saints which have won three straight following an 0-3 MAAC start to even their conference record.
Senior captain Michele Tremblay set up the decisive score when she won possession at midfield and made a sliding pass to D’Angelo. The freshman then took two dribbles and made a move to her right before blasting home the winning shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner as Siena secured its second 2-1 double overtime victory at Siena Field this season. The Saints have now won nine of their past 11 matches in Loudonville dating back to last year.
The assist was Tremblay’s seventh of the season to move her into a tie for the conference lead with Quinnipiac’s Nadya Gill and Kelsey Goldring. Tremblay has now totaled 17 assists for her career to pull into a tie for sixth place in program history.
Marist (5-7-2, 2-3-1) opened the scoring just 3:05 in when a corner kick from the right by Alexa Svensson was accidentally headed in by a Siena defender. But just like last season’s thrilling comeback in Poughkeepsie, the Saints would battle back.
Monds evened the score just under four minutes into the second half. Junior midfielder Olivia Stegner intercepted a pass which she volleyed through to Monds who beat a pair of defenders and finished inside the top left corner for her third score of the season.
Each team totaled 13 shots in an evenly played match, while the Red Foxes held a 6-2 advantage in corners. Makala Foley made seven saves for Marist.
Siena will look to keep its momentum going when the Saints host Saint Peter’s Saturday at 1 p.m.
