Saints Edge Past Buffalo
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior captain James Beeston broke a scoreless stalemate in the 85th minute, leading Siena Men’s Soccer to a 1-0 victory over Buffalo Sunday afternoon in the Saints’ home opener.
Siena (2-1), which snapped a six-match, nine-year losing streak against Buffalo (0-3-1) with an identical 1-0 win in Western New York last year, beat the Bulls at home for the first time since 1998.
Siena controlled the action throughout, out-shooting Buffalo 14-4 and held an 11-3 edge in corners. The Saints enjoyed numerous chances and finally wore down Buffalo for the only goal they would need late in the match.
Matt Hemsley lofted a ball in close from the left to David Itoafa who headed it down into the box. A streaking Beeston just beat the keeper to the ball and put enough on it to send it into the open goal. The reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, Beeston now has eight points in three matches and has scored the game-winning goals in both of the Saints’ wins.
Adam Myers made one save, improving his career record to a perfect 5-0 with his second clean sheet. Waleed Cassis made two saves for the Bulls.
Siena continues its season long three-game homestand Sunday when they host Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
