Saints Secure Tie in Non-Conference Finale
Sophomore back Tara Sobierajski scored in the ninth minute as Siena Women’s Soccer earned a hard fought 1-1 draw in the team’s non-conference finale at Vermont. The Saints conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 3-4-2 record.
Vermont (2-4-1) out-shot the Saints 14-5 and held a 9-3 edge in corners, but it was the Siena that struck first.
In the ninth minute, a corner from the left deflected to the top of the box. An unmarked Sobierajski ran to the ball and blasted home her first goal of the year. Siena’s leading returning, Sobierajski’s tally was the first goal this season from a Saint who had scored last year.
UVM notched the equalizer early in the second half. In the 56th minute, Taylor Palmer fed Sarah Martin who fired a sharp angle shot into the net.
Senior captain Taylor Booth made six saves for the Saints which are now unbeaten in the past eight seasons against the Catamounts (7-0-1).
Vermont was Siena’s seventh non-conference opponent from the nine-team America East. The Saints finished 2-3-2 against the conference.
With the tie, the Saints enter conference play riding a four-match unbeaten streak (2-0-2). Siena opens next Wednesday at defending MAAC Champion Monmouth. The final contest of the Saints’ season long three-match road trip kicks off at 7 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.
