Saints Set Records in Scoreless Draw
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Soccer registered a program record 33 shots but was unable to cash in on any of them as the Saints had to settle for a scoreless draw vs. Niagara at Siena Turf Field. Senior goalkeeper Aleksa Radosavljevic made four saves to record his fourth clean sheet of the season for Siena which remains undefeated in six matches vs. the Purple Eagles under head coach Cesar Markovic.
The Saints (2-4-6, 0-1-3) out-shot Niagara (2-8-2, 1-2-1) by a 33-11 margin to break the previous program single-match record of 29 shots set 13 years ago at Iona. Both teams attempted six corners apiece as Siena played to its third scoreless draw this fall while setting a new program single-season record with their sixth tie.
Senior striker Alexander Tejera paced the offensive effort in setting a new program record of his own with 11 shots to break former teammate Junior Rosero’s mark of 10 set twice last season. But Tejera was only able to put one of his markers on target as while the match featured 44 total shots, the teams combined to put just 13 shots on goal.
Freshman midfielder Alejandro Riquelme added eight shots and sophomore captain Conor McGlynn attempted six shots for the Saints which had entered play averaging just nine shots per match on the season. McGlynn seemingly gave Siena the lead when he finished a header with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. But the offsides flag went up as the Saints would advance to their ninth overtime contest in 12 matches this season.
Steve Casey made nine saves for Niagara.
Siena returns to action Saturday with its lone road contest during a five-match stretch with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Monmouth.
