Saints Stun Vermont Late, Again
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women’s Soccer continues to give Vermont nightmares. For the third consecutive season and fourth time in the past five years, the Saints scored either the game-tying or game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation or overtime to stun the Catamounts. This year junior midfielder Gabby Albano proved to be the hero, as her golden goal in the 103rd minute lifted Siena to a 2-1 double overtime triumph at Siena Field.
Albano also assisted on the other score for the Saints (3-2) which have scored the golden goal to come out victorious in their past three overtime contests dating back to last season. Vermont (3-2) killer Madison Vasquez also scored for Siena which ran its unbeaten streak to 11 straight seasons (9-0-2) over the Catamounts.
Vasquez was also at the center of the Saints’ previous two last minute comebacks against Vermont. Last season she scored the match-tying goal with 52 seconds remaining in regulation in Burlington, and in 2015 tallied the game-winning score with just 15.4 seconds left in the second half. Like Albano, Siena great Brittany Pfaff also scored in the 103rd minute to shock the Catamounts here in Loudonville in 2013.
But for the second straight season, the Saints would have to rally to defeat Vermont. The Catamounts came out firing in the first half, and opened the scoring when Ella Bankert finished her second of the season in the 13th minute.
However, Vasquez netted the equalizer with her team-leading third goal of the young season just over four minutes into the second half. Albano and freshman Deanna Lomino were credited with assists on the goal.
With 6:22 remaining in the second and final extra session, Albano sent the Siena fans home happy. Classmate Lindsay Mulligan played in Albano down the right side 1v1 and she ran onto a 25-yard blast which she buried top shelf for the golden goal. Senior captain Michele Tremblay started the play and picked up a secondary assist for the Saints which won their sixth straight over the Catamounts in Loudonville.
Vermont held a 22-14 advantage in shots, but sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Dorado came up huge with 12 saves for Siena which improved to 33-6-2 (.829) in non-conference home matches since the start of the 2007 season.
The Saints continue their busiest stretch of the season featuring four matches in eight days when they travel to LIU Brooklyn for a 6 p.m. kickoff Friday.
