San Diego State Earns 2-1 Victory at UNLV
The No. 7/13/8 San Diego State women's soccer team continued Mountain West action on Friday evening as it picked up a 2-1 win over UNLV at Peter Johann Memorial Field. With the victory, the Aztecs improve to 13-1-1 and 3-0 in MW action, while the Rebels drop to 9-3-2 and 1-1-1 in conference play.
Megan Jurado scored the game-winner for SDSU at the 54:13 mark as the senior took advantage of a penalty kick. It marks Jurado's tenth goal of 2012 and her sixth game-winning goal this season.
UNLV came out in the opening half to tally the game's first goal in the 11th minute as Jenn Wolfe scored from 12 yards out off a corner kick. Both teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the first half and at the end of 45 minutes, the Aztecs held a 3-2 advantage in shots.
SDSU came out in the second half and wasted little time. Just 3:57 into the period, Jurado bent in a corner kick perfectly and junior midfielder Carli Johnson chested in an attempt that connected to tie the game at 1-1 at the 48:59 mark.
After a great shot attempt from sophomore forward Hannah Keane in the 52nd minute, the Aztecs found the back of the net at the 54:13 mark. A foul was called on UNLV and Jurado set up to take the penalty shot and fired a successful attempt that ultimately would be the game-winner for SDSU.
UNLV kept battling as the second half winded down, but the Aztec defense hung in there and prevented the Rebels from scoring. When it was all said and done, SDSU held a 9-6 advantage in shots (7-2 in shots on goal). Redshirt sophomore Rachel Boaz played all 90 minutes in net en route to her 13th win of 2012.
The Aztecs will now travel to Fresno State for a conference battle with the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday at Bulldog Stadium.
