San Jose State Defeats CSUB 2-1
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--San Jose State scored two goals in a four minute span late in the second half to defeat CSU Bakersfield 2-1 Friday night.
With no score heading into the 79th minute, the Spartans' Jonathan Salceda took a long pass from Frankie Beauchamp. Salceda dribble in and scored from three yards out. 3:46 later Garret Foster took advantage of a CSUB turnover and blasted the ball in from 20 yards for what proved to be the gamewinner.
CSUB forced the action and the pressure resulted in a Eduardo Caldaza (Fr., S. Los Angeles, Calif., Roosevelt HS) crossing pass that Gyasi Zardes (R-Jr., Hawthorne, Calif., Leutzinger HS) headed in with 4:12 remaining.
The Roadrunners (4-2-4, 1-1 MPSF) outshot the Spartans (4-4-1, 1-0-1 MPSF) 17-13 and held a 10-9 advantage in corner kicks (6-2 in the second half).
"I thought we were the dominant team, but give credit to San Jose, they are a very good team. They caught us on a break that first goal kind of took the wind out of our sails and then we had to chase the game," said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. "I won't be too reactive of this game because I thought for the most part we played well. We needed a little more of a cutting edge in front of the goal because we made a lot of chances, but we didn't do enough with them. To me, that was the story of the game."
CSUB hosts Seattle University Sunday at 1 p.m. as MPSF play continues.
