Sandmann’s Golden Goal gives Patriots win
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Francis Marion University sophomore forward Levin Sandmann scored with 1:43 remaining in the second overtime period to secure a key 3-2 Peach Belt Conference win for the Patriots over Flagler College, Wednesday evening (Oct. 26) in men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion concludes its regular season at 8-7-1 and moves into second place in the PBC standings with a 6-3 record and 18 points. Other PBC squads will conclude their regular-season slates later this week. Regardless, FMU is guaranteed of finishing in the Top 4 and secures a home match in the conference tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Sandmann’s match-winner, his sixth of the year, came at 108:17 and was assisted by freshmen Matteo Capitani and Matthew Bainbridge.
Flagler took a 1-0 lead on a score by Pedro Silva in the 30th minute. However, the Patriots answered with a pair of goals only 13 seconds apart.
FMU sophomore Oliver Drakenhammar knocked home the rebound of an attempt by Gaspard Mianne at 37:16. Mianne then put the Patriots on top 2-1 with a long shot from outside the box at 37:29.
The Saints forced overtime when Silva scored on a direct kick with 2:05 left in regulation. FMU did record a pair of shots in the first overtime session, but neither was on frame.
Francis Marion outshot the Saints 20-14, but both teams earned four corner kicks. Fourteen of the Patriots’ attempts were on frame. Sandmann led the way with nine shots, including six on target.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes recorded five saves, including one in the 107th minute allowing Sandmann the opportunity to work his magic. Flagler goalkeeper Lex Craggs made 11 stops as the Saints fall to 5-8-1 and 4-4-0.
