SB's Giordano named Rookie of the Week
September 24, 2012
Cambridge, Mass. - Freshman midfielder Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) of the Stony Brook men's soccer team has been named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Giordano, who earns the honor for the first time, tallied a goal and an assist in two games last week. In a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart last Wednesday, Giordano scored 26 seconds into the match on a header low in the box off of a free kick from senior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.).
Giordano followed that up by recording an assist on what proved to be the game-tying goal in a 1-1 draw at Central Connecticut State on Sunday. Giordano squeezed the ball between two Blue Devils defenders on a pass to senior Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.), who tallied the equalizer in the 87th minute.
Giordano is the second player this season to earn Rookie of the Week accolades. Fellow freshman Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) was named Rookie of the Week on Aug. 27.
Giordano and the Seawolves are unbeaten in their last five matches and are 6-2-1 overall this season. They open up America East play this Saturday at Albany at 5 p.m.
