Schwarz, Monroe Take Home MAAC Weekly Honors
EDISON, NJ – Helping their squad to an undefeated week in non-conference play, Siena Men’s Soccer sophomores Greg Monroe and Samuel Schwarz received MAAC Weekly Awards, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Monroe took home MAAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season, while Schwarz was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the second time in 2019.
Starting in-goal for the 23rd consecutive match, Monroe made six saves in the Saints’ 3-2 victory over America East power Vermont on Sept. 16 at Hickey Field. The Clifton Park, NY native helped the Green and Gold take home their first win over the Catamounts since 2009, including a diving save near the end of the match that preserved the team’s one-goal advantage. The accolade marks Monroe’s first career weekly award.
Earning Rookie of the Week for the second time after also doing so on September 2, Schwarz scored a goal in east of Siena’s two wins last week. The Germany product put in a feed from Eamonn Conway against Vermont to put the Saints up, 2-1, and scored unassisted for the squad’s first of three goals at Sacred Heart on Saturday. Schwarz is now tied for the team lead and knotted for third in the conference in goals scored this season (3).
Siena enters its final non-conference match of the season winners of back-to-back matches and with its most goals scored through seven contests (14) since 2010. The Saints next play at Cornell on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
