Scoring Drought Ends With 4-0 Victory Over Temple
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Any doubts concerning whether or not the Scots could score goals this season were put to rest when the Covenant men's soccer team dominated local Tennessee Temple University 4-0 Tuesday night. Covenant opened the scoring in the 4th minute of play and never looked back, finding goals from junior Tyler Morrison (twice) and freshmen Hunter Harrison and Joel Friesen. Prior to Tuesday’s contest, the Scots had only managed to score 4 times, and only once had they scored more than a single goal in any one game.
Morrison’s first goal came in the 4th minute after a wonderfully played ball by mid-fielder Chris Pifer found Morrison wide open at the top of the 18. Morrison needed only two touches to play the ball past TN-Temple goalkeeper Dustin Rivera for the 1-0 lead.
25 minutes later, the Scots doubled that lead when Crusader defender Corey Stiltinpole was booked for a deliberate handball in the penalty area. Harrison’s ensuing PK was his 2nd goal of his freshman season.
Play continued with the score 2-0 through the halftime break. In the 54th minute, Morrison found the back of the net again, this time assisted by Johnny Frame.
Covenant ended the scoring for the evening with 12 seconds remaining when Friesen floated a ball from roughly 30 yards out just over the reach of Rivera.
The Scots, who controlled possession for a ridiculous percentage of the action, took 32 shots, including several off the woodwork. Temple managed 3 shots, only one of which required any work from Scots goalkeeper John Eger.
With the victory, Covenant moves to 2-4-2 on the season and will play Saturday at home against University of Alabama- Huntsville. Game play will begin at 7:00 p.m.
