SDSU Improves To 7-0 With 2-1 Win Over Iowa
It was a record-setting day for the No. 20/21/T-24 San Diego State women's soccer team as they continued their recent success with a 2-1 victory against Iowa State at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Sunday morning. Not only did the Aztecs improve to 7-0 for the first time in program history, they also set a new school mark for consecutive shutouts at six and half games.
Megan Jurado, who has scored the last three game-winning goals for the Aztecs, was at it once again on Sunday. This time, the senior didn’t have to wait for overtime. In the 82nd minute, the forward received a pass from sophomore Hannah Keane on the right side of the field and proceeded to drive the ball towards the near post. Jurado fired a shot using her left foot and watched it fly right inside of the post for the goal.
Keane was just as instrumental for the Aztecs early on in the contest, as she notched the first two attempts for SDSU in the opening 10 minutes. The second of those shots was successful at the 9:48 mark as sophomore Haley Locker assisted Keane to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish for a majority of the first half.
Despite SDSU being in control for most of the opening 45 minutes, Iowa State managed to squeeze in a goal in the 43rd minute. Up to that point, the Cyclones had just tallied one shot as goalkeeper Rachel Boaz and the Aztec defense had kept the ISU offense in check. Kaeli Flaska, however, managed to get a shot past Boaz, as the redshirt sophomore’s six-game shutout streak came to an end.
San Diego State continued to control the momentum in the second half as it kept firing shots at goalkeeper Maddie Jobe. The Cyclones, meanwhile, were only able to tally three attempts, while the Aztecs had six shots before tallying the game-winner at the 81:50 mark.
SDSU won the shot battle, 13-6 (5-4 in shots on goal), and they also owned the advantage in corner kicks by a 6-4 margin. Boaz notched her seventh consecutive win on the season as she continued her stellar play in net.
The Aztecs return to action on Friday when they travels to the Santa Clara Tournament. SDSU will play No. 5/5/4 Stanford on Friday, Sept. 14 and then face off with No. -/19/- Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 16. Both contests will be held at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
