SDSU Rolls Past UNLV on the Road, 3-0
LAS VEGAS – San Diego State posted its seventh straight victory after it defeated UNLV on the road, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Johann Field. The win moved the Aztecs to 11-2-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in the Mountain West. The Rebels, meanwhile, watched their record fall to 7-6-1 (2-4 MW).
With SDSU’s seventh victory in a row, the Aztecs have now enjoyed a winning streak of at least seven games in three consecutive seasons. And after scoring three goals in Las Vegas, San Diego State has recorded 18 in its last five games, which is something the program has not accomplished since October of 1998.
The first-place Aztecs continued their two-plus-week scoring spree in the 56th minute when Haley Locker streaked down the right sideline and passed it to fellow senior Hannah Keane. The forward took it from there, putting her first touch past UNLV goalkeeper Jordan Sallee into the upper corner. The goal was Keane’s third of the year and the assist was Locker’s fifth of 2014 and represented her second straight game with a helper (3).
Nearly four minutes later in the 60th minute, Keane took the ball to the end line and crossed the ball into the box where Aliyah Utush came to meet the pass. The freshman then squeezed her shot into the lower right corner to give SDSU a 2-0 lead. The goal was Utush’s third of the season and the assist was Keane’s fifth.
San Diego State added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Angela Mitchell dribbled 50 yards down the pitch, changed directions and took the perfect angle on her shot to propel the visitors to a 3-0 lead. The goal was the freshman’s fourth of the year.
The Aztecs, who were outshot in the first half (4-3), finished the game by attempting 11 and holding UNLV to just three shots in the final 45 minutes (SDSU, 14-7). SDSU also enjoyed an edge in shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (6-2). In the second half, San Diego State did not allow a single Rebel corner kick.
Keane, meanwhile, led all players with five shots and Mitchell had a game-high two shots on goal. SDSU goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn continued her stellar effort, picking up the win and earning her fourth shutout of 2014. The junior also made a game-high three saves.
San Diego State is perfect on the road in four tries against Mountain West foes this season and improved to 15-1 since 2011 vs. league opponents away from SDSU Sports Deck.
After playing four of its first six conference games on the road to date, San Diego State returns home on Friday, Oct. 17, to begin a three-game homestand. First up is Utah State at 7 p.m. PT with Boise State to follow on Sunday, Oct. 19 (11:30 a.m. PT). The three-game home stretch will conclude on Friday, Oct. 24, when Wyoming visits for a 7 p.m. PT game. All three games will air on the Mountain West Network.
