SDSU soccer win streak reaches four...
The South Dakota State women's soccer team continued to have great success in conference play, beating IUPUI 1-0 on Sunday afternoon...
The Jackrabbits scored 19 minutes into the first half and made it hold up.
Junior Christa Nyblom took a corner kick for the Jacks and placed it into the box. It deflected off of the IUPUI goalkeeper and into the side of the net.
The goal was Nyblom's third of the season, good for third on the team.
The Jacks led 1-0 at halftime.
IUPUI outshot SDSU 6-3 in the first half, including a 4-3 shots on goal advantage. SDSU took two corner kicks, one of which proved very significant. The Jaguars did not take a first-half corner kick.
IUPUI's bench received a red card at the end of the first half, as well.
The second half proved rather uneventful for both teams.
SDSU took control statistically in the second half, outshooting IUPUI 5-2, including a 3-1 shots on goal advantage. The Jaguars took five second-half corner kicks to the Jack's two, but none of them proved as important as the first-half corner kick by Nyblom.
Senior Kayla Braffet led the offensive attack for the Jacks with three shots, all of which were on goal. Nyblom only took one shot, but she made it count.
Senior goalkeeper Kat Donovan made five saves en route to her seventh shutout in eight wins.
"It was a very scrappy, intense game," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "It was not a very pretty game, but we persevered to get a tough result on the road."
The Jacks improve to 8-5-1, but more importantly, 4-0-0 in The Summit League.
IUPUI falls to 1-9-4 and 0-3-1 in The Summit League.
Next up for SDSU is a home weekend of conference play. The Jacks host Oakland on Friday, Oct. 14, and IPFW on Sunday, Oct. 16. Game times are set for 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Oakland was picked as the preseason favorite to win The Summit League and is currently in fourth place in the league standings. Last season, SDSU lost to the Golden Grizzlies in Rochester, Mich., 2-1. Oakland leads the all-time series against the Jacks, 3-2-0.
Last season, SDSU topped IPFW 1-0 (ot) in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Jacks lead the all-time series against the Mastadons, 4-1-0.
