Seahawks Announce 2019 Team Captains
Staten Island, NY – Wagner head women's soccer coach Phil Casella has announced that seniors Christine Letendre, Maria Nunez, and Kaitlyn Ross have been selected as team captains for the 2019 season.
This is the second straight season that this trio have been selected as team captains, as they were joined by Peyton Beck '19 last season as team captains.
"I'm excited to have Christine, Maria and Kaitlyn lead our team once again," commented Casella. "When I took over the program, I was looking for individuals who showed commitment to change, have a high work ethic, are fantastic in the classroom and lead by example. I have seen each of them develop as young adults in this role the last two years and really can't wait to see what they can accomplish in their senior years as leaders."
Letendre, a three-time Northeast Conference (NEC) Fall Academic Honor Roll selection, started all 17 games for the Seahawks last season. Through the first three years of her career, the Staten Island native has appeared in 42 matches while earning the start in 29 of those contests.
Nunez, who is also a three-time NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll selection and two-time Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, played in 15 matches while earning the starting nod in 11 tilts a season ago. The East Greenwich, RI native led the Seahawks with five goals and ten points. Nunez scored a goal in three straight contests (10/12, 10/14, and 10/19) and finished the 2018 campaign eighth in the NEC in goals scored and points.
Ross, a three-time NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll honoree and two-time Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll selection, played in 12 matches last season, earning the start in 11 of those contests. The Sayville, NY native logged a season-high 97 minutes at Long Island University (10/6/18).
Letendre, Nunez, and Ross along with the rest of the 2019 squad commences its season on the road on Friday, August 23 as Wagner squares off against Rider in Lawrenceville, NJ.
