Seattle U Women's Soccer Earns 3-0 Win Over Hawaii
The offensive pressure from the Seattle University women's soccer team finally paid off, as the Redhawks scored three goals in the final 14 minutes to earn a 3-0 victory over Hawaii Sunday afternoon at Championship Field.
Once again, the Redhawks earned more scoring chances throughout the contest, outshooting the Rainbow Wahine, 20-8, and earning nine corner kicks while giving up only three corner kicks to Hawaii. However, Hawaii goalie Kanani Taaca made two saves in the first half, and the Rainbow Wahine defense held off the Seattle U offense for the first three-quarters of the match.
"I was pleased with the way we played in the first half, even though we did not score," head coachJulie Woodward said. "I thought we were composed and competitive, and our effort was good. I was impressed with how we won the game, as we found our finishing touch in the second half."
In the 77th minute, Seattle U drew a foul about 30 yards away from the Hawaii net. Mary Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.) sent the free kick into the box, where Jordan Salisbury (Federal Way, Wash.) settled the ball and chipped it over Taaca's head into the net for her fourth goal of the season. It was also Hill's fourth assist of the season, all coming on goals by Salisbury.
Five minutes later, the Redhawks took possession of the ball away from Hawaii and went on the counter attack. Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.) sent a pass through the Rainbow Wahine defense onto the foot of Ava Ames (Seattle, Wash.), who drove in and sent a shot from close range past Taaca for her second goal of the 2011 campaign.
Three minutes after that, the Redhawks earned a corner kick, and Chelsea Jennings (Tacoma, Wash.) restarted the action with a short pass to Liana Heberer (Oceanside, Calif.). Heberer's blast from 25 yards away sailed past Taaca into the right side of the net, tallying her first career collegiate goal in the process.
Emma Levy (Sammamish, Wash.) led all players with five total shots, followed by Megan Daniels(Lake Forest, Calif.) with four total shots. Chelsea Miyake and Alexis Colacchio led Hawaii (3-10) with two total shots apiece, while Ashley Haruki earned the only shot on goal for the Rainbow Wahine.
Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) was credited with one save in earning her fifth shutout of the season. Taaca finished the match with four saves.
"We needed a game like today, we've had some games where we played well but did not get the results we wanted. We don't like to always focus on the final result, but it was important for us to play well and put the ball into the back of the net. Going into a stretch of road games, we have some confidence and we know we can play well," said Woodward.
Seattle University (9-5) will play its next two matches on the road, beginning next Friday, Oct. 14, against Cal State Bakersfield starting at 5 p.m. After a match at Big 12 school Texas Oct. 23, the Redhawks will play their final home match of the season Friday, Oct. 28, against Montana beginning at 3 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies scheduled to take place before the match starts.
