Seattle U Women's Soccer Stymied by Gonzaga, 2-0
Despite holding a 15-6 shot advantage, the Seattle University women's soccer team was shutout by Gonzaga, 2-0, Friday evening at Championship Field. Between a strong defensive line and a pair of first half goals, the Bulldogs (6-4) snapped the Redhawks (8-4) four-game winning streak.
"I don't think we were ready to start the game, got down two goals and then we (were) playing catch up from there. The difference in today's game was a mentality. Gonzaga, effort and attitude-wise, was the better team on the day. We had a bad game today and hopefully will bounce back on Sunday," said head coach Julie Woodward.
The Redhawks opened the match by sending the ball deep into the GU half, but a pair of corner kicks and a Jordan Salisbury (Federal Way, Wash.) shot on goal were not enough to get SU on the board early.
In their first offensive opportunity, Gonzaga's Sarah Rhodes crossed the ball to Kasey Rubosky outside the 18-yard box. Rubosky managed to get past the SU backline and shoot in the game-winner from 12 yards out to the far post.
From that point forward the Redhawks were put on their heels and forced to play catch up. Both Kat Prati (Moorpark, Calif.) and Emma Levy (Sammamish, Wash.) managed to find openings on target, but the Bulldogs' goalkeeper Susan Brown was able to easily grab them.
In the 37th minute, a scramble and loose ball in the box allowed the Zags to add to their early advantage off a Tori Lee shot from six yards out.
In the second half, Seattle U was much more aggressive and put together several runs deep into the GU half. Their efforts were unrewarded as the Gonzaga backline forced many shots from range and deflected chances inside the box.
Sophomore Ava Ames (Seattle, Wash.) had a pair of on target shots in the 63rd minute, including a volley shot from five yards out, but GU's Brown was able to make both saves. SU also had a solid opportunity in the 79th minute, when Megan Daniels (Lake Forest, Calif.) raced past a Zag defender and sent a shot from 20 yards out. Brown was able to make a last second adjustment to stop the ball from going into goal.
The Redhawks will look to get back on track on Sunday, Oct. 2, as they host Boise State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
