Seattle women defeat UCSB

October 21, 2009
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In thrilling fashion, the Seattle University women’s soccer team earned their second straight road win of the season at UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon. The Redhawks dramatically defeated the Gauchos off a Kara Kuttler goal in the 104th minute to come home with a 3-2 victory. With the goal, Kuttler breaks into the top-10 all-time goal scorers in SU history.

“I thought we were really good at finishing opportunities in front of the net,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “Overall we played decently, but what helped us win today was our second efforts from multiple players.”

Senior Jamie Coe got on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute. The Duvall, Wash. native took the ball and shot in from 10 yards out. The Redhawk tri-captain has scored in back-to-back games and brings her career total to 18.

As the first half clock wound down, Santa Barbara responded with the equalizing goal off a Kailyn Kugler converted corner kick. With less than two minutes left in the half, Kuttler blasted in a ball from 15 yards out to take a SeattleU 2-1 lead into halftime.

The home team’s offense was not kept at bay for too long, as they got on the board to even the score for the second time behind Kugler. She scored on a pass from Katy Roby to earn her second goal of the contest.

With regulation time ticking away, the Redhawks kept the ball inside the Gaucho box. At the 80:39 minute mark, freshman Taylor Bolibol fired off a shot that was saved by a UCSB defender just before it was able to cross the goal line. Nineteen seconds later fellow freshman Liana Heberer took the ball and sailed off a shot on target that went just high and hit the crossbar to send the game into overtime.

In their second overtime game of the season, SU initially was unable to get any offensive spurt going. On the other end of the field, the defense worked hard to prevent splitting their California road trip and sent the game into a second overtime period.

After 100 minutes of action, the Redhawks took the field for the final period of play. Four minutes into double overtime Kuttler received a cross from Alicia Malstrom and headed it into the goal for her second game-winner of the season. This season the Redmond, Wash. native has scored a team-leading 10 goals and she has solidified herself as one of the top scorers in Redhawk women’s soccer history with 20 career goals in just under three seasons. In addition to making Seattle history, she has also scored in back-to-back contests.

SU (7-9-1) returns to Seattle behind a perfect 2-0 record this weekend in the Golden State. They will close out the 2009 campaign with a final trip to California. The Redhawks will take on Pepperdine on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. in Malibu, and close out the year in San Diego with a 1 p.m. contest with the USD Toreros.
