#Seawolves drop season opener at Rutgers
Piscataway, N.J. - The #Seawolves gave a spirited effort in their season opener but couldn't overcome two Madison Tiernan goals, falling to Rutgers 3-1. Sophmore Maxie New (Clayton, N.J.) provided some consolation with a well-struck free kick to break the Rutgers shutout in the 82nd minute.
Ryan's Reaction
"The result is disappointing because we expect to win every game, but we learned a lot about ourselves today," said Ryan. "I was pleased with how our newcomers responded to playing in their first big environment. For parts of the game we showed our promise for this season, especilly against a very good team in Rutgers."
Goal Recaps
- The Scarlet Knights got on the board in the fifth minute when preseason second team All-Big Ten selection Madison Tiernan found herself free at the far post, cooly converting a one-on-one with Stony Brook goalkeeper Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.).
- The Seawolves struggled with Rutgers long throw-ins all night long and it finally cost them in the 62nd minute when Tiernan got on the end of a long throw to tap in a much needed insurance goal for her second goal of the game.
- The back breaker came in the 74th minute when Jennifer Andresen was left alone at the far post. Her finish inside the far post put the fiesty Seawolves away.
- New got the Seawolves on the scoresheet with a powerful left-footed free kick that went through the hands of Rutgers keeper Casey Murphy. She was presented the opportunity thanks to some strong work from sophomore Leah Yurko (Cumberland, Md.) who drew the foul which led to the goal.
SBU Highlights
- Senior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.) was the recipient of a deft through ball from junior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) with Stony Brook trailing 1-0. The striker did well to keep her shot low and on target but she was denied by a toe save from Murphy.
- Again Devereaux ignited the Seawolves attack when she found a streaking Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) down the right flank early in the second half but her shot swerved just wide of the back post.
- Sophomore centerback Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wis.) appeared to have drawn the visitors level in the second half with a powerful strike from 40 yards out but her dipping shot was tipped over the bar by a sprawling Murphy.
