Seawolves ends regular season with 2-0 loss
November 5, 2014
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook #Seawolves wrapped up their 2014 regular season with a 2-0 home defeat to America East regular season champion UMBC on Wednesday night. The loss bumps the #Seawolves to the no. 6 seed, which means they will travel to Binghamton to face the Bearcats on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
Goal Recaps
- Stony Brook's strong start was nullified by a Malcolm Harris goal in the 31st minute. The forward peeled off the backline and controlled a cross from Stephen Ho before going in unimpeded on #Seawolves goalkeeper Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas).
- Marquez Fernandez tacked on an insurance goal in the 69th minute, rising up to head home a corner kick.
Highlights
- Senior Keith McKenna (Great River, N.Y.), celebrating senior night, created the game's first scoring chance when he headed a ball to himself, shed a defender and fired a low, hard shot that was pushed just wide of the goal and out for a corner kick by the UMBC keeper.
- Junior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) also came close to scoring the game's first goal when his cross, intended for freshman Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium), skipped just over the diminutive midfielder's head. Duval's effort caused enough of a distraction to momentarily freeze the goalkeeper but he eventually recovered just in time to prevent the cross from finding the net.
- Junior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) hit a blast from 30 yards out early in the second half that just missed the mark wide-right.
Notes
- UMBC outshot Stony Brook 11-8 for the match but shots on goal were even at 5-5.
- Fritz led all Seawolves with three shots, while he and Giordano both put two shots on goal.
- Also honored alongside McKenna for senior night were Mario Mesen (San Jose, Costa Rica) and Jevaughn Vance (Arima, Trinidad).
